Growing up, we’re often encouraged to be good little girls and not make waves. Yeah, but… it’s summertime. Just think of how much fun it is to really make a big SPLASH instead. To be bodacious and vibrantly alive takes energy and, sometimes, a letting go of our good-little-girl mentality.
Peeking into our trusty dictionary we find that vibrant means (1) pulsating with life, vigor, or activity and/or (2) responsive, sensitive.
From the Latin root word vibrare, meaning “to wave or move quickly to and fro,” also comes the word weave. Soooooo, to play with words a bit, one might extrapolate that we weave vibrant aliveness into our lives by becoming actively responsive, sensitive to life’s pulse.
Would that we could. But to do so, we must be free to respond. Alas, these days our activities are most often dictated by everything from day-runners to five-year plans! Overly encumbered by all our carefully determined projects and schedules, we risk losing our ability to be sensitive and vibrant.
To be in the flow is to experience life in each present moment, like a surfer riding the ocean’s waves. But, of course, that doesn’t mean there was never preparation or a plan. The time, energy, focus, and skill development that allows the surfer to take those giant waves in stride most certainly required discipline and commitment.
And so it is with being vibrantly alive. Sometimes it’s about doing and sometimes it’s about doing nothing much. How about getting lazy??? How about taking at least some time each day and maybe even one day each week that is totally unscheduled, laid back, maybe even (Goddess forgive) UNproductive. Allow yourself to just spontaneously be with whatever is flowing your way.
